Postpartum depression is categorized as depression that occurs after childbirth. In some extreme cases, untreated postpartum depression may prevent new mothers from caring for their baby or handle other daily tasks.
Symptoms:
Some people may experience symptoms within the first few weeks after giving birth, but they may occur earlier during pregnancy. Others may experience postpartum depression up to a year after giving birth. Symptoms can include:
- Severe mood swings
- Excessive crying
- Loss of appetite
- Insomnia
- Fatigue
- Anxiety or panic attacks
- Irritability or anger
