Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a chronic lung disease that makes it difficult to breathe. It is often used as an umbrella term to describe multiple lung problems, including emphysema, chronic bronchitis, refractory asthma, and lung cancer. There are different treatments available to help individuals with COPD and other lung ailments. These include antibiotics, vaccines and oxygen therapy. Doctors may suggest surgery depending on the severity of the case.
COD is caused by smoking, air pollution, and genetic factors. Secondhand smoke and working with chemicals or fumes can also contribute to lung irritation and COD. Some symptoms of COD are:
- Chronic cough
- Shortness of breath
- Frequent respiratory infections
